A typical day of a software programmer is to do the following tasks

Meeting the clients virtually or in person and gathering the requirements. These meetings generally take place at the start of the day or the start of the week.

If you are in to testing, you work on testing the program designed by the developer in a time bound and result oriented manner. This doesn't require that much mastery in your coding skills but a good tester is an expert in the technology. For being a developer, you have to be an absolutely good coder and in most cases programming experiences of 5000 hours is necessary to become a great coder.

Software engineers might have to work directly with clients, troubleshooting and removing errors in their systems. This involves quite a lot of travel too and would lead working onsite in various parts fo the globe.

A bachelor's degree is commonly required, but some employers prefer a master's degree in computer science, information science or a related field. Employers also want to see at least 3 years of IT experience, with 5 to 10 years of experience for upper-level positions. The skills needed as an IT specialist include analytical, organizational, leadership, communication and decision-making skills. You need familiarity with project management software, customer management software, server operating systems, web platform development software and language platforms, like Microsoft SQL, C++ and Perl. You should also be capable of using computer equipment, such as servers and network analyzers. While certification is voluntary, it is common within the field.
